In my past year of recruiting drivers I have discovered through interviewing drivers the reasons why drivers leave a company to drive for another company.
In this ultra-competitive market to hire qualified drivers it is well known there is a shortage of drivers and qualified drivers don’t have to look very far to find new driving position. In many cases they can leave a job one day and get hired the next day with another company. You would think money is the main motivation to leave a company, if a driver can make .01 cent more with the company next door, do you think that most drivers would leave? Well, money is a major motivation to leave but it’s not the .01 cent extra per mile.
Companies are staying competitive with wages and benefits across the industry. Surprisingly most drivers leave for the “straw that broke the camel’s back.”
Small manageable things (Ankle Biters) that were never resolved. The problem it keeps recurring like a bad habit. Many examples would fill this blog but just to give you a few, lack of home time, lack of miles, truck is breaking down all the time, my dispatcher and I just don’t get along, and it’s a lack of communication in the organization. The list goes on but for whatever the reason it’s the succession of small things, until one day driver has simply had enough.
Pay is the not main issue which is why Epes Transport makes every effort to make sure drivers are set up for success and not failure. Every non driving support channel is there for the driver ensuring rapid action response to any situation. Great thing about Epes Transport, everyone is involved in retention of a driver and we don’t take the one size fits all approach with the drivers.
Individualistic approach to the driver is working for our company for it’s understood every driver is different and they are treated that way. Many companies are experience 100% or more turnover rate, we are currently at 41% which is outstanding in today’s market.
Please post your comments and tell me why you think drivers are leaving companies. Thanks
